Intertrigo

Overview:

Intertrigo refers to a condition where a rash develops within the skin folds of the body. The most commonly affected areas include, but are not limited to, the armpits, under the breasts, lower abdomen and groin. Individuals with a higher body mass index tend to be affected more often as well as those that experience excessive sweating and malnourishment.

Symptoms:

Symptoms can range from mild irritation with moisture to significant inflammation, redness, pain, foul-smelling odor and drainage.

Causes:

Multiple factors such as excessive heat, moisture, and friction can lead to intertrigo. Oftentimes, secondary skin infections can exacerbate the condition. Intertrigo can also be associated with other dermatologic conditions such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.

Treatment:

The most important aspect of the treatment is to keep the area dry and cool. Antifungal powder such as Zeasorb® Antifungal powder used daily can prevent the rash. Dilute vinegar soaks or Burow’s solution can help to prevent the rash. Prescription antifungal creams may also be
prescribed. To help the inflammation, a topical steroid may also be used as needed. For severe cases, oral antifungal medications can be prescribed.

Treatment expectations:

Depending on the severity of the intertrigo and patient’s general health, this condition typically responds to treatment within the first week or so. However, given that this condition occurs within the skin folds, it may be chronic in nature and patients may experience relapses in the future. If treatment is ineffective, your physician may choose to perform a biopsy on your skin to determine the best course of action.
